Alois Sibal was born in 1943 in Svata Helena (Romania)
but moved with his family to Bohemia (in the Czech Republic)
in 1946. He entered violin-making school there at the
age of 15 and began working for a large shop in 1980.
Mr. Sibal took master courses from Josef Potzl and Emil
Lupac and upon completion of his studies was awarded
a Meistership and admitted as a Geigenbaumeister. He
was then allowed to open his own Atelier (workshop),
the dream of every Czech violin maker.
In 1988-9, Mr. Sibal spent 6 months working alongside
makers in Chicago, USA; in 1992, he repeated this collaboration
with advanced work in Linz, Austria. Since 1988, he
has had an affiliation with Stanislav Marinov (a specialist
in the acoustical properties of wood) which resulted
in three awards (First Place for Tone) for his instruments
in competitions held in Bohemia. These competitions
included 12 other new and several old and excellent
Italian violins. Mr. Sibal favors older woods and gets
lovely results with his superb and distinctive varnish,
which frequently makes use of an "antiqued"
effect. |
