Antoni Krupa was born in Zakopane, Poland. Beginning
in 1962, he studied at the school for violin making
in Nowy Targ. In 1973, he graduated from the University
of Agriculture in Poznan (in the Technology of Wood
Section). From 1973-78, he worked in the Musical Instruments
Museum in Poznan in their restoration workshop.
In 1974, Mr. Krupa began teaching violin making –
first at the Musikhochschule and later at the Academy
of Music, in Poznan. In 1998, he was awarded the title
of Professor of Violin Making. Since 1974, Antoni
Krupa has been a member of Polish Union of Violin
Makers. He was awarded the Second and Fourth Prize
in the Violin Category at the National Violin Making
Competition in Poznan in 1979, and First Prize in
the Violin and Viola Category in 1984. In 1991, he
was awarded the Fourth Prize and the Prize for Best
Tone Quality in the Violin Category at the Wieniawski
International Violin Making Competition in Poznan.
Mr. Krupa was selected to be a member of the jury
at the Wieniawski Competition in 1996.
Antoni Krupa has made over 250 instruments: 210 violins,
30 violas, 11 cellos, baroque violins, lira da braccio
(copy of Giovanni d’Andrea, Verona 1511), and
lutes. His instruments are played and cherished by
musicians in Poland, Germany, Italy, Austria, Spain,
Switzerland, Iceland, Sweden, Belgium, the U.S., and
Australia. Mr. Krupa’s violins are based primarily
on Antonio Stradivari or Guarneri del Gesu models,
his violas on Amati and Stradivari models, and his
cellos on Stradivari and Montagnana models.
He has two sons who are also award-winning violin
makers. The eldest son, Marcin, is also a maker of
fine bows. |
