Jan H. Bursik

Working in Moravian region of the Czech Republic (where the composer Leos Janacek lived and worked for many years), Jan H. Bursik has established a significant reputation with string players and string instrument connoisseurs in Europe. His instruments are played by members of many professional orchestras, including the Czech Philharmonic, the State Philharmonic in Brno, the South Bohemian Chamber Orchestra, and the Slovak Sinfonietta. They are also owned and played by leading soloists and members of Czech and Slovak chamber groups and are found in Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Spain, Norway, Korea, and the U.S.

Born in 1949, Mr. Bursik attended the famous Czech school for violin makers followed by six years of violin study to sharpen his skills as a player. He later spent a year as an apprentice of the famous Czech violin maker, Vladimer Pilar, before opening his own workshop.

Mr. Bursik uses only the finest materials: select Bosnian maple (aged for at least 20 years) and Czech and Italian spruce (aged for a minimum of 30 years). His oil varnishes are a beautiful golden/brown color with his violins based on Stradivari (golden period), Guarneri del Gesu, and his own models. He gives each of his creations/instruments a name, lovingly inscribed on the label. He also supplies a certificate (beautifully bound) that describes the woods used and the instrument's dimensions (the violins are typically about 355 mm.). All instruments are entirely handmade.

Mr. Bursik's three children are also award-winning luthiers -- Jan Jr., Bronislav, and Nicole. Jan Jr. recently placed 7th (from 150 contestants) in the famous competition for tone and workmanship in Mittenwald, Germany (Internationaler Geigenbau Wettbewerb, 2001).
