Alois Sibal - Biography

Lajos and Lajos Konya Jr.

Lajos Konya Jr.

The name Konya is famous in Hungary for a distinguished line of violins makers. First, there was Istvan Konya who died only a few years ago in his 80s. Some of his instruments are currently owned and played by members of the New York Philharmonic (Hungarian players in the know!).

The elder Konya had two sons, both of whom are important makers today -- one emigrated to Italy (Stefan or Stefano Konya); the other (Lajos), has remained in Hungary where is a leading maker in Central and Eastern Europe.

Lajos Konya Jr. is the youngest follower of the Konya family tradition. He studied this art in Liszt Ferenc Music Academy and has gained practical knowledge of the process of making violins in his grandfather's, father's, and uncle's workshops. He has also visited other Hungarian and foreign workshops to gain more experience in this trade.

While still studying, he made several instruments and was awarded the title "Student of the Year" for his work. His participation in exhibitions has been successful, evidenced by several memorial certificates, honorable mentions, and special prizes.

The work of both of the Hungarian Konyas reflects their individual styles and way of shaping instruments. Today their instruments are found in Italy, the Far East, the USA, Switzerland and Hungary. They like to form direct relations with their customers so they can meet fulfill special requirements and challenges.
