Tomas Skala

Considered by many to be one of the finest of contemporary Bohemian/Czech/Central European makers, Tomas Skála was born in Mlada Boleslav in what was then Czechoslovakia in 1970. He studied and worked in several well-known shops where he learned the luthier's trade. His principal teacher was his father-in-law, Mr. Emil Lupac, who has taught many of the current generation of violin makers in Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia in a famous school of violin and bow-making in Bohemia.

Today, Mr. Skála lives and works in Bohemia (the western region of the Czech Republic near the German border) where he builds violins, violas and violoncellos in a shop he shares with Mr. Lupac, using models and patterns by Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesu.
