Jorma Panula

Distinguished conductor and
conducting pedagogue, MAESTRO JORMA PANULA will lead the Mastercourse/Symposium.

Maestro Panula is an authority on the music and performance of the orchestral works of Jean Sibelius -- the focus of the event.

He has conducted major orchestras on all continents and was professor of conducting in his native Finland at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (since 1973). He presently teaches conducting courses at the Stockholm Royal Academy, and formerly taught at the Copenhagen Royal Academy. Panula is in demand as an effective teacher of conducting mastercourses throughout the world. Several of his former students are now music directors of major orchestras, including Esa Pekka Salonen (LA Philharmonic), Osmo Vanska (Minnesota Orchestra, Lahti Symphony), Jukka Pekka Saraste (Toronto Symphony), Sakari Oramo (City of Birmingham Symphony, Finnish Radio Symphony), and Petri Sakari (formerly Iceland Symphony). The BBC has labeled him as one of the 60 most influential musicians alive today.

Plzen Radio Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1946, the Plzen Radio Orchestra, is the leading professional orchestra in Western Bohemia, a region that has a long tradition of musical excellence. One of the Czech Republic's top orchestras, the Plzen Radio Symphony Orchestra performs the entire orchestral repertoire, from the late Baroque through contemporary works, with conductors from around the world. They are internationally recognized for their many fine records and participation in major music festivals. The PRSO often tours Europe, Japan and the US.

Dear Prospective Participants, the Symposium will begin with an evening rehearsal on 25 September, 2001 and conclude with the final concert on 5 October.

The Masterclass and Symposium will take place in the rehearsal and performance halls of the Plzen Radio Symphony Orchestra in Plzen, Czech Republic (West Bohemia), September 25 through October 5, 2001. The Masterclass/Symposium will focus on the orchestral works of Jean Sibelius with a full symphony orchestra, 16 daily rehearsals, two public concerts (4 and 5 October), lectures and discussions.

Eight conductors will be selected as active participants from the applicants. These conductors should be experienced professionals who want to deepen their knowledge of the Sibelius orchestral repertoire and its interpretation. Each of the conductors will conduct a major work on one of two public concerts and be on the podium each day. Up to 12 auditors will also be selected. Auditors need not have had significant professional conducting experience, but should be experienced conductors with an interest in Sibelius and/or conducting technique. Auditors may also be others who are simply interested in the orchestral works of Jean Sibelius. Those auditors who are experienced conductors will also conduct during one or more rehearsals.

The fee for the course is 2,200 USD for active participants and 500 USD for auditors excluding travel, accommodations and meals. Half of the amount must be received by our Symposium office (US checks or International Money Orders only, please) by 30 July, 2001 (after selections are announced). The remainder must be paid in Plzen (USD, in cash, please) prior to the beginning of the course. There is also a 30 USD application fee (non-refundable) that is payable at the time of application using the same method of payment.

Please send your application, including your Curriculum Vitae, and a video tape (in either PAL or SECAM formats) of rehearsal and performance with a professional orchestra (required of active participant applicants and auditors who wish to conduct), to the Symposium office by June 15, 2001. All materials must be received by that date. Selection of participants and auditors will be announced no later than July 15, 2001. Maestro Panula will review the tapes and applications and make the selections. Please be sure to provide us with your contact information (e-mail, telephone and/or fax numbers).

Please note that participants should apply for the full course - it is not possible to register for only a portion of it.
